About Grand Cru Baroque

"Music is the universal language of mankind" - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Mission & Organization History

Our Mission is to provide exceptional performances and programs of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music to as many and diverse audiences as possible. We also make occasional forays into Modern and Traditional musics. Why? Because back in the day musicians played both classical and vernacular music and most of the music was newly composed. Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi didn't play Baroque music. They played modern music.

The Grand Cru Arts & Education organization and Grand Cru Baroque ensemble was founded by people who shared the same dedicated and progressive attitude towards performing music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. The goals we set for ourselves included questioning the traditional concept of historical performance practices, as well as the traditional concept of a public concert.

We make our programs accessible to the general public, while at the same time keep them stimulating to an audience of early music aficionados. We accomplish this with our pre-concert events, detailed program notes, and post-concert Q&A sessions.

Over the years our programs have included everything from intimate chamber music, orchestral music with concerto soloists, cross-genre concerts with traditional music players, sacred and secular music for chorus and orchestra, vocal a capella concerts, and staged baroque opera productions.

How it works

Grand Cru Baroque

Grand Cru Arts &Education is the presenting organization for the Grand Cru Baroque ensemble. The organization also presents workshops directed by members of the ensemble and occasionally by visiting artists. We are not a presenting organization for other ensembles. We are, however, interested in learning about individual artists. Please feel free to send us URLs of your work.
